Maximin Grunhaus, Pinot Noir, Mosel 2019

About the Wine:

A concentrated yet elegantly refined Pinot Noir grown in the blue slate soils of the Grosse Lage (grand cru) Abtsberg vineyard.

About the Producer:

The historic Maximin Grünhaus estate was first documented in the 7th century, making it not only the oldest, but one of the best estates. It belongs to the family of Carl von Schubert who are sole owners of the 3 Grosse Lage (Grand Cru) vineyards, Abstber, Bruderberg, and Herrenberg, making it a Monopole. Each of these vineyards has its own distinct differences in terroir, which explain the unique character of the wines made at Maximin Grünhaus. They lie at the foot of a long, steep south-facing slope on the left bank of the tiny Ruwer river, about two kilometers upstream from where it joins the Mosel.

93 pts. James Suckling

Work in the vineyards is done in close harmony with nature. Fertilization is organic, and no pesticides or herbicides are used. The wines ferment naturally in the deep, cool cellar where they are matured in a combination of stainless-steel tanks and neutral oak Fuder casks.
